'Andrew Sutton is on Facebook'

Facebook is a useful way of offering quick notifications to introduce topics that might be of wider interest – through a brief headline, two or three lines to tell a little more, then a link direct to where one can read more still, perhaps in detail.

The link is usually to a media source accessible through the Internet, or to the pages of Conductive World (including to this site here).

Plus and minus

A note on Facebook is much quicker to write than a blog posting, a great advantage. A disadvantage is that it does not seem possible to track where any Comments generated are coming from, or to see in in what numbers they come, but it does look like these postings are reaching a somewhat different audience than do blog postings, and perhaps a wider one too.

A big plus

Over then last few weeks Facebook is showing itself to be a platform capable of generating and supporting discussion about some of the outstanding questions surrounding Conductive Education. OK, much of this so far hs been from 'usual suspects' (and is none the worse for that) but it is also darwing in 'new' people.

THE CONDUCTIVE POST

A blog of blogs

The Conductive Post, a centralised resource for accessing the CE blogosphere, has gone on line today:

The Post is a real-time, open-access update of what is published on CE blogs around the world – and more.

How does it work?

Completely automatically, just like the blog links that many sites already display. As new blog postings appear on The Post, the latest one will move up to take the lead position, and everyone else will shuffle back a place. You will see that each blog has its two most recent postings featured, one below the other.

There is an exception to this. For the moment at least, ‘guest postings’ will stand continuously at the lead position.

The Post reflects what comes on line. Already this is a pretty diverse range of positions and opinions. There is no party line, on any matter. If divergent opinions emerge, so well and good. Conductive Education is short of many things, and an important one of these is DEBATE. What will happen as further posts emerge? We shall see.

Is anyone missed out? Almost certainly. Please let us know.

There is a place for less frequent bloggers, and for newbies to get established.

Many of those who try to find out about Conductive Education on the Internet may not find the CE blogs, for all their value and collective impact, Bringing CE blogs together in this way (cyber-conduction!) should make them more visible and increase their visitor-traffic, offering bewildered wanderers in the CE cyber-jungle the best presently available guide to current hot spots for public concern and discussion.

The Post is not republishing blogs. It is simply a search engine. The actual blogs are to be found on their own sites. Click across from The Post to read the complete blogs. If you have comments to make on what you find there, make these on the original blog postings.

What to make of it?

Firstly, I just have to take BlogSpot's word for it that these are the post popular postings on Conductive World so far. This is an 'official' gadget so presumably it is in a position to access and process the necessary data. Perhaps this gadget will update itself, perhaps not. I shall just have to check back and reload it some time if I want to know.

Secondly, this is an ordinal not an interval scale. Are the entries fairly even spaced or are there great gaps between the numbers involved for different postinsg? The actual statistics could be very interesting. As it stands, however, this is just a parlour game, like Top of the Pops, just a bit of fun

Granting such reservations, what if anything might these findings tell about the readership's preferences?

Interest extends much wider than just to the English-speaking world: the top item is written wholly in Russian, and of three further of these postings, one has a title in Chinese characters (deliberately in order to catch Chinese attention), one reviews the situation of CE in Germany, and the other reports a Dutch postgraduate study undertaken in South Africa. Note that the latter two might be regarded as relating to the developing world.
This is hardly a 'scientific survey' of the CE-blogoshere and should not be treated as such. Its sample is drawn wholly from a single CE blogsite (albeit the most prolix over the relevant years) within question, in an emerging sector that is still very unsure about using blogs and social networking. Three of the top-ten postings, numbers 2, 3 and 4, were concerned with such matters.
There may be factors at work here other than readers' prefeences for what they have wanted to read about Conductive Education on this site. One factor influencing results might have been that for a short time the Comments pages of some couple of dozen postings were quietly hi-jacked to advertise dodgy pharmaceticals. These have now been removed and the problem appears to have been stopped by improvements in BlogSpot's anti-spam measures. It may be therefore that two of these top-ten postings had their figures boosted by people looking to boost their sex lives.
Two of these top ten touch upon employment and professional devlopment, neither exclusively with respect to conductors but, I suspect, in practice probably so. As has been remarked before on Conductive World, the magic word 'jobs' always seems to attract attention.
One of these postings concerned a political debate, in a legislature. Interpret the interest in this how you will. Over the years since 1986 there have been quite a bit of Parliamentary attention to Conductive Education in the UK Parliament that has touched upon Conductive Education. This example was quite good one, but not quite the best. Maybe people have a hankering to hear more of such consideration, and not just in th UK...
Number 1, the Russian-language article, what does one make of that? Possibly in part that this may have unfairly benefitted from having dodgy-pharmaceuticals adverts secreted in its Comments. Of perhaps there is considerable appetite in the former Soviet lands to read about воспитание – upbringing – expressed in their own cultural terms.

Research, history, economics, finance and funding, pedagogy and upbringing, and the recent world Congress, did not feature in readers' top ten, despite the cyber-ink spent on them by Conductive World over these years.

So many reservations!

How to test the validity of such a list? Just possibly, if these ten postings do indeed represent high-interest topics within Conductive Education, then collecting together brief summaries to all ten in a single space might ring a chime across Cyberspace, to be caught by the search engines and resound back as hits here on to this site. This site, http://www.conductive.world.com/, has just been fitted with sitemeter: this will be an interesting test for its launch.

Or should a 'top ten' be regarded as no more than just a bit of fun? It might be interesting to see what triangulation might emerge from other CE-blogs using BlogSpot (if they care to install this gadget and report the results).

January 2011

Daily postings on Conductive World ceased on 31 December 2010. Future postings will appear intermittently, and not too frequently.

Andrew Sutton states his immediate future involvement in Conductive Education as follows –

I shall continue with CE for the time being, not least with Conduction (http://www.e-conduction.org/), to which I hope that I can now direct a little more time. with especial interest in encouraging a new generation to stand forward and bring new hands to the tiller.
I shall continue to do the same with Conductive Education Press, and may perhaps bring a couple of little writing projects of my own to fruition.
Postings on Conductive World might still appear, at a much reduced rate, as and when prompted.

No doubt I shall continue to respond to individual requests and enquiries.

JOBS FOR STUDENT-CONDUCTORS

Some ten years ago, in January 2000, the first CE Job Centre opened on the Internet. It soon became apparent that this website was being used by student-conductors seeking for holiday jobs and by people looking for students to employ. One could see the attraction from both sides. One could also see grounds for caution., again for both sides in such transactions.

In response to this, in 2000, some brief notes of guidance were prepared –

Students working in the holidays

In all professions there is a long tradition of students' working in their holidays, not just for money but also to broaden their experience and to see something of the world. There is no reason why students training to be conductors should not do the same.

As well as those opportunities open to all students, possibilities also arise for CE students to work in holiday schemes providing conductive experiences for children and adults with disabilities. Students may find working in such holiday schemes a stimulating and rewarding extension of their studies.

At the moment there are students in training at the Peto Institute, NICE/Wolverhampton University, the University of Keele and Tsad Kadima. Next academic year training will begin at Aquinas College (Grand Rapids), Pfennigparade (Munich) and the Institut Keil (Vienna). There is therefore a rapidly growing potential workforce to assist on summer schemes.

Both students and those who employ them should, however, take reasonable precautions to safeguard their own positions, the welfare of those who use their services and the good reputation of Conductive Education.

1.It should be made clear and explicit to everyone concerned in the scheme that students are not conductors (this should include not only to service-users but also to anyone who might look in on what is being done, including local media, supporters, outside professionals and researchers).

2.Students and organisers of schemes should make it very clear to each other what students' courses have covered up to that point and what not. Students should provide potential employers with a written reference from someone teaching on their course.

3.The level of responsibility for students working in holiday schemes should be clearly defined in advance and agreed by all concerned, especially for the conductors working on the scheme and users of that service. Appropriate reservations should be made for any opinions or accounts of the Conductive Education given by students. Students should not offer unsupervised professional opinions to service-users.

4.Students working on holiday schemes should not be described as 'conductors' but by a term such as 'assistants'.

5.Payment should be at a level appropriate to an assistant, not at the same level as a qualified conductor.

6.For the sake of everyone concerned (students, organisers and users), the scheme should ensure proper insurance (professional indemnity) and this should explicitly cover liability for the actions of untrained staff.

7.Student conductors should never work without the supervision of a qualified conductor who is fully aware of the students' limits and the responsibilities of supervision.

Most holiday schemes employ assistants. Organisers should regard students who spend a working holiday on their scheme as assistants who have, according to the stage of their training, additional understandings and advantages. Organisers should not think of students as 'conductors on the cheap'.

Most importantly, there are unsubstantiated rumours of students' passing themselves off as fully qualified conductors. Whilst one hopes that such accounts are unfounded, organisers of summer schemes are advised to take the normal precautions.

Ten years down the line the course at NICE in Birmingham continues and, in much larger numbers, the Pető Institute in Budapest has recently changed to training a different kind of conductor. Tsad Kadima in Israel is starting up training again, again soon, recast for the twenty-first century. Aquinas College in Grand Rapids may be restarting up again too – also, one gathers, with a modified course. There is also the complication of the training course for 'conductor-aides', recently announced by the Pető Institute, to begin this September.

Like ten years ago, therefore, there is a significant range of courses and, one presumes, a corresponding range of what students need and what they can offer in return.

Two financial points were not mentioned in the guidance of ten years ago, the question of wages (and expenses) and possible insurance problems. Presumably there is useful experience on both to be shared.

Language

Conductive World is published in English (a sort of internationlised British English, with typos) but welcomes contributions and comments in any language.

Conductive Education is an international movement encompassing many nations and Major languages for publishing Conductive Education on the Internet are currently Chinese, English, German and Hungarian, but there are also a number of other national Internet 'literatures'. Inevitably reference is made to non-English material and at times quotations are given in the in their original language.

English may indeed currently be 'the international language' of Conductive Education, but English-speakers are depriving themselves if they do not at least try to see what they are missing because it is 'in foreign'.

Machine-translation is quick and FREE, and continues to improve, slowly.. According to linguistic proximity it can prove surprisingly effective. Just remember that Hungarian has linguistic proximity to no other tongue! At the foot of each page of ConductiveWorld, choice of three machine-translation services is offered under the heading of MACHINE TRANSLATIONS.

Conductive World has been running since October 2007. At the time of writing its archive already contains approaching six hundred items, some very brief, others rather long. To search for a specific topic got to the top of any Conductive World page, type what you are looking for into the white box on the left-hand side, and click on the Search symbol (a little magnifying glass). You will then be presented with previous postings in which your topic has been mentioned. This may not be effective in identifying older posts and an alternative is being sought.

You may also scroll down the DIRECTORY on the left-hand side of the page till you come to SEARCH CONDUCTIVE WORLD BY TOPIC. Click on a topic that interests you to find previous posts that touch upon this.

Referencing

Conductive World is not an academic publication. It is fundamentally a personal document with a wider social mission, It reports events, facts, circumstances, and along with these it also expresses opinions and derives conclusions. It endeavours to make this distinction clear, and to provide written sources for information wherever possible and appropriate.

Over two years of publication different styles of referencing have been tried out, and sometimes time constraints have led to their shortened presentation. Throughout this, however, the aim has been and will remain that checkable sources should be easily identified by readers.

Comments and discussions

You are cordially invited to publish your own comments on Conductive World. You may comment on anything that you read on these pages and there is no requirement to register in order to do so. To comment, go the foot of the posting that you are reading and Click on COMMENT. Write what you want to say in the box provided. (please, no more adverts from saddoes for dodgy Viagra substitutes – boring!).

Some people find it hard to publish their comment once they have written it. The easiest way is simply to select Anonymous. If you still want to identify yourself you can always sign your name at the end of your comment – but you do not have too. Of course, if you really do not want people not to know who you are, you can always use a pseudonym (there is after all a strong tradition of this on Conductive Education, going back to before it even began!)

Social-networking

All new postings on Conductive World the ezine and on its administrative site are announced on Twitter and Facebook, with links to the articles themselves. Knols

An attempt to provide additional information on line by means of Google Knols was discontinued because of the experienced impossibility of achieving acceptible, stable formatting. Two small groups of documents stand, awaiting a better means of presenting unpublished documents on line at no extra cost and with no requirement for technical sophistication. These are linked to under the headings of SUPPLEMENTS and ANDREW SUTTON'S BIBLIOGRAPHIES. The two bibliographies are both presently incomplete).

If you like a particular article and would like to send it directly to others to read, then you can email it direct, along with your own message if you wish. At the bottom of each article you will find small post symbol (a small envelope with an arrow on it). Click on that symbol and complete the form that comes up. You can include a short message. You can send a single article to up to ten different addresses at one time.

Music and video

Fror those who like background music, there is also a link to background music from Radio Antarctica, under the title MUSIC. This station is chosen because I like what it does, I like its music, and I approve of its austere sourcing policy.

These are now so common as no longer to merit the attempt of comprehensive listing. The on-line video directory in the left-hand column of http://www.conductive-world.info/ has now been discontinued.

Viewing these videos is of course free but the principle of caveat emptor still of course applies. Some of these videos are good, some indifferent, and some excruciating. As with materials on the Internet generally, hereonin you're on your own!

Make use of Twitter

It is only three weeks since Twitter was first subject to attention in Conductive World (though, to be pernickety, it did receive a walk-on part in a review of the blogosphere last October). And it is only ten days since a further update here on Conductive World.

Following what has been happening in the rest of the world, especially since the recent events in Iran, people in Conductive Education are beginning to move into the Twittersphere to try out micro-blogging for themselve.

Just do it

It is to early to think of this as a 'g0ld-rush', but there is virgin territory to be staked out.

Anybody with a computer or a modern mobile phone can do it

Dont miss your chance to be in there and stake a good claim.

Simple, practical tip

"Conductive Education" now seems the definitive search phrase that most people use (and not just in English).

If you join Twitter and start posting there, try to squeeze this phrase into whatever you write, so as to be found by the maximum number of people
Make it easy for the search engines and for the people who are looking for something in our field and, in helping them, help yourself!

Conductive World has gone on Twitter, to boost the amount that the fast-growing worldwide Twitter community has something to find when it uses that system's new search engine to find "Conductive Education".

All new articles and other features on Conductive World (both .info and .com) are now notified routinely on Twitter (and the CE-Library and Conductor blogs are now doing the same). Other uses will also be developed. As numbers of users/followers grow, it is expected that Twitter will develop a variety of end-user applications on and around Conductive Education.

So far there are CE-tweeters from the UK, the US, Germany and Norway. No others have been spotted yet but Twitter's user-growth is exponential so it won't be long...

Save the library

Any and all literature, especially evidence-based practice research is essential for any service- delivery – therefore it is vital that this library continue.
Utterly incredible that anyone would take away such a pivotal role. It undermines the drive forward for CE. Who was accountable for such a decision?
The decision to make the librarian at NICE redundant seems both ill-considered and short sighted. In terms of the post, it risks the future for the sake of a small present gain. In terms of the individual, the absence of Gill Maguire at the Foundation with her years of experience, her commitment and expertise and her many contacts can only have a negative impact on the present and serious consequences in the long term.
I sign the petition as Director of Move & Walk/Sweden and as the Head of the Swedish Conductor Association.

You have no idea how lucky you are to have such a library. I was lucky enough to find out about CE through a cousin who read an article about it, we immediately made the contacts to go to Hungary, with great results to the children who were able to travel from Chile to Hungary!
These books, notes and documents are not replaceable so it is vital for the future of Conductive Education to have them and be able to look back on the original documents and notes.

A significant and unique collection such as this deserves the services of a professional librarian. The collection is too important to allow it to become neglected; without attention from a dedicated librarian the collection is in danger of stagnating and dissemination of knowledge, so vital to practitioners, is likely to cease.
This is a very important collection for everybody, who is interesting about conductive education. The hard work to collect these books in the last years could be an other reason to save the library.This most important institution must be allowed to continue its vitally important work.

Gill has been immensely helpful to me when I was trying to find literature for my dissertation. When there is so little published material available, I believe it is extremely important to retain the services of such a knowledgeable person.
This is the one person that must be saved from this recession.
It is the future of the library that is important here. For a library to be of real use it needs to be kept up to date, be a living library, be able to keep others up to date, maintain awareness of new resources, provide an information and enquiry service. To achieve this, a professional dedicated librarian is needed. Conductors do Conductive Education, librarians run and maintain libraries, neither can do the others work and that is how it should be. I hope the National Library gets the staff it deserves and is able to go forward successfully and continue to build up its resources.
I just cannot imagine being where I am without the help and support that was provided by many people including importantly Gill.

Save this important and valuable resource to enable students to study appropriately and to enhance the work of Conductive Education.
